So what does your donation do?
Rescue.
It all starts with the rescue. We actively work to outbid “kill buyers” at kill pens in the U.S. These “kill buyers” buy equines for cheap and then sell their meat for a profit. Donkey meat is wanted for dog food in certain countries and donkey skin is wanted for beauty products. Read more about it on our “Our Mission” page. These sweet creatures are being slaughtered by the millions globally. Around five million donkeys are slaughtered each year. We know we can only make a small dent in this number but with your help we can continue to rescue these beautiful creatures and bring awareness to this cause.
Rehabilitate.
Our first priority is to immediately make every donkey feel safe, secure, and loved. The mini donkeys we rescue can come to us with a number of different issues and complications. These donkeys can be dehydrated, sick and weak from the long trip, be emaciated, have scars/wounds from abuse, have pre-existing conditions, or can have contracted a sickness at the kill pens. A lot of the donkeys who come to us are pregnant. Sometimes they are given to the kill pens pregnant and sometimes they become pregnant from being in the kill pens with male donkeys/horses. It takes extra care, time and sometimes resources to take care of these mamas, but every baby life we save is absolutely worth it!
Rehome.
We are continually searching for forever homes for the miniature donkeys (and sometimes horses also) that we rescue. This requires a screening process to ensure these sweet creatures’ lives only improve from here. Our rescue donkeys have been through so much. Each story is so different. Some of our donkeys having loving homes and then find themselves in the kill pens. Some come from abusive situations or have been neglected for years. This is why we take careful consideration when finding the perfect forever home for our kind-hearted minis.
